Music, adventure and travel

Randy traveled near and far this year... And in the middle of all of that travel, he (and Jen) had a chance to enjoy some absolutely amazing music.

It all started with a gift of a cruise. Now, if you know Randy, you may have heard him say he would never go on a cruise. But this one was different. It was the Cayamo cruise. Jen, Randy and his brother (along with a date) had a chance
to enjoy awesome
music while riding on a cruise ship. They missed meals while enjoying music from Steve Earle (who even smiled when he took a picture with Randy), Lyle Lovett, Robert Earle Keen and even Buddy Miller and EmmyLou Harris. Seriously. Incredible experience. That doesn't even include the fun we had ziplining through the jungles of Belize and a relaxing beach day in Mexico. After the cruise, the music fun didn't stop. Jen and Randy enjoyed awesome shows in Columbia, MO and St. Louis including the Punch Brothers, Avett Brothers and Drive By Truckers. We even took part in a new music festival in St. Louis called LouFest where we got to enjoy our favorites the Carolina Chocolate Drops and Alejandro Escoveda.
This summer, Randy helped plan out an incredible adventure to Maine, Maryland, Washington DC and the North Carolina mountains. We enjoyed great food, hikes, bike rides and relaxing book reading time.

The job at the Missouri School of Journalism also gave Randy a chance to visit China again. This time he visited Nanjing and Beijing. Some of the highlights of the trip included the search for really fun poorly translated signs. This picture says "Happiness is a warm gun" at a clothing store. It's either a tribute to the Beatles or a serious error in word choices. I'm guessing a happy warm gun was not the end goal. You can always follow Randy's adventures and sense of humor on his Twitter page. He tends to post his best stream of consciousness there or on his Facebook page. You can also email him.

Along with teaching at Mizzou, Randy changed roles in the KOMU newsroom. He moved from the managing editor position he's held for the last seven years to executive producer. This means he's helping build future newscast producers just like he was before returning to KOMU as a professor.

Randy is looking forward to a really exciting December holiday. We're headed back to Florida to spend Christmas with Jen's side of the family. There are some really fun plans while the family is in town. You'll probably hear a lot more about that in next year's holiday website!
